Victoria Quays and Tinsley Canal
This was previously known as Sheffield Canal Basin which is close to Sheffield City Centre and at the head of the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal.
The Canal was opened in order to connect with River Don Navigation way back in the year 1814. This allowed boats for the first time to reach the heart of Sheffield.

By the 1990s, the entire area got a new life lease, new buildings were constructed and the warehouses were restored. The derelict arches of the railway became transformed into shops, Sheaf works became pubs, and on one side of the basin, a marina was created. The Supertram route, the city centre, train and bus stations are close to the basin, and this has made it a significant destination for the boaters.
History
The first boats began to use this Canal Basin in February 1819. The canal had 15 bridges at this length, as well as 12 locks and an aqueduct. Only 2 of the original 15 bridges still remain today.
The canal was opened in the year 1819 for navigation of boats between a new basin at the centre of Sheffield and River Don. The navigation of the other 4 miles of South Yorkshire & Sheffield is formed by the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal.
When the railway reached Sheffield in the year 1830, the business of this canal as badly hit. It was then taken over by the Railway of Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire in 1848 and became part of River Don Navigation.
In the year 1895, River Don was then taken over by the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Canal Company. By 1900, plans were underway to enlarge it to a ship canal, but these plans were never to be executed.
The Walking and Cycling Routes Nearby
Located in Yorkshire, there is a Sheffield Canal towpath on the waterside walk. This Canal runs from Tinsley near the Meadowhall centre to the Sheffield canal basin. There are numerous stone bridges and locks along the way and is a narrow towpath suitable for walkers. The 1997 film "The Full Monty" featured this canal.
The route begins in Sheffield with attractive scenes of the Victoria Quays. Heading toward the North Eastern via Attercliffe, you will bypass Don Valley Stadium, then to Tinsley locks and finally finish at Meadowhall. There are many restaurants at the huge indoor shopping centre for you to get be refreshed at the end of the walk.
From the city centre, River Don flows into Meadowhall. It could, therefore, be easy for you to go back through the Five Weirs Walk. This walk follows a waterside route which is suitable for cycling and walking along the river.
