Sheffield Theatres and Galleries
Sheffield is one of the most artistic cities in the UK. It hosts the largest theatre complex outside of London. This place has a long history of being an outstanding centre of the arts. It was the proud winner of Theatre of the Year awards in the 2013-2014.
They make most of their own productions which attract up to 400,000 people every year. It is a constant hive of activity with over 700 performances yearly on their three main stages- the Crucible, Lyceum and Crucible Studio. The Sheffield Theatres were even named Most Welcoming Theatre of 2015 in the UK Theatre awards.
Lyceum Theatre
This is the largest of the three theatres, holding up to 2,100 people. It was established way back in 1765. Through the years it has undergone a lot of changes and modifications and served many functions throughout its existence.
It was The English Opera House for 15 years till it was burnt down but it was soon reopened in 1834. It closed in 1986 and came back in 1996. It was most recently refurbished in 2014. It is most commonly known for hosting Disney's Lion King.
Crucible Theatre
Being the second largest theatre in Sheffield after Lyceum, it has a capacity of around 1,000 seats. It was completed in 1971 and it hosted its first show in the same year. It has also been refurbished a couple of times over the years. It was last redone in 2009.
The Crucible also host sporting events such as the annual worldwide snooker championship and is unique for its custom productions. Every year Sheffield reaches about 20,000 young people and prepares them for their promising future in theatre.
Crucible Studio
The Crucible Studio is found within the Crucible and can only hold roughly 400 people. Its small size is an advantage since it allows performances to be more intimate. The stage is also built such that the audience is all around it; ideal for bands and small performances.
Galleries in Sheffield
Sheffield also hosts museums and art galleries displaying different forms of art. There are plenty of galleries and museums all over Sheffield but the three most famous galleries are the Millennium Gallery, Graves gallery and Site gallery.
Millennium Gallery
Established in 2001, Millennium gallery has captured the city's industrial heritage. It is an art gallery and a museum at the same time. It displays a metalwork collection, the Ruskin collection, arts and crafts and special exhibitions.
Graves Gallery
The Graves art gallery was opened in 1934. It is located around the city centre close to the Millennium Gallery. Over the years it has collected artwork from many prominent artists to build to its massive collection.
Site Gallery
Site Gallery was founded in 1979 funded by Yorkshire arts. It is an international centre for contemporary art. It hosts a lot of events, debates and talks to connect artists and art lovers. It specialises in moving media, new media and performances.
